2009 COMMENCEMENT ADDRESS
SHARON AND DOUG ROTHWELL
MPA alumni Sharon and Doug Rothwell jointly addressed the 2009 graduating class on May 9 at the School of Government. They first met when they entered the MPA program in 1978, and have maintained their commitment to public service through their respective careers and through the establishment, in 2005, of the Rothwell Scholarship, which funds two years of tuition and expenses for an outstanding student.
Sharon Rothwell is vice president of corporate affairs for Masco Corporation, headquartered in Taylor, Michigan. She represents Masco in its community and charitable activities and in government relations and civic activities. Prior to joining Masco in 2003, she served as chief of staff to Michigan Governor John Engler, as director of labor relations for the state of Michigan, and as Delaware's state personnel director. Doug Rothwell has been president of Detroit Renaissance since 2005. He has also helped found One D, a collaboration of the region's major civic organizations. Prior to joining Detroit Renaissance, he served as executive direcctor of Worldwide Real Estate for General Motors, was president and CEO of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, served as chief of staff to the governor of Delaware, and was an executive vice president at MBNA Corporation.
