Nanette V. Mengel Scholarship Endowment
This scholarship is awarded to several MPA students each year.
Established by the family of the late Professor Mengel, who taught the communications class in the MPA program for 23 years, this endowment celebrates the life of a teacher of not just communication, but also of life. She taught in many other programs at UNC-Chapel Hill, including City and Regional Planning, Health Policy and Administration, and the School of Medicine.
Although her official task was to teach written and oral communication, her unofficial role became that of confidant, advisor, cheerleader, and friend. The lessons taught by Nanette Mengel extended beyond those related to communication skills; those who knew her best remember her teachings on humility and the joys of serious contemplation, simple living, and in placing value on each individual. In a community where far too many people engage in self-aggrandizement and quick criticism, Nanette Mengel was self-effacing and eager to find the good in others.
“Nanette had the capacity to make each one of us feel special. And she had the ability to make each one of us believe that we can be better writers . . . although she was wise enough and careful enough not to say to all of us that we could be good writers.”—Margaret Henderson ’90, Associate Director Public Intersection Project, School of Government
