The Rothwell Scholarship is awarded each year to an outstanding student in the
Master of Public Administration program at the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Government. As the premier award in the MPA Program, the Rothwell Scholarship
funds two full years of tuition and expenses.
The 2007 Rothwell Scholar is Jason Damweber. Jason received a bachelor's degree from the Unversity of Virginia in both Government and Economics. After graduation, Jason worked for Teach for America, where he taught English in Littleton, NC. He has also has experience in public policy research at both the University of Connecticut Department of Public Policy and the UVA Center for Survey Research.
In 2005, Doug and Sharon Rothwell began an endowment to support
graduate students at the School of Government. Their gift created the
largest annual scholarship in the School's history. The Rothwells are
both graduates of the UNC MPA Program, and Doug is a member of the
School of Government Foundation board.
Doug Rothwell is president of Detroit Renaissance, a private nonprofit
organization led by the city's major corporate executives that focuses on
regional economic development. Previously he was a senior executive
for two Fortune 500 companies, and he served in the cabinet of three
governors. Sharon Rothwell is vice president of corporate affairs for
Masco Corporation, a leading manufacturer of brand-name home and
building products and services. She previously served as chief of staff to
Michigan Governor John Engler; director of labor relations for the state
of Michigan; and state personnel director for the state of Delaware. The
Rothwells live in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The Rothwell Scholarship was
announced at the annual Dean's Dinner in November 2005.
